Edgecam - 4 Axis


4 and 5-Axis simultaneous machining offers key advantages over conventional indexed 3-Axis machining:

  • Reduced cycle time by machining complex components in a single setup. In addition, dimensional accuracy can be significantly improved through the elimination of positioning errors between setups.
  • Improved surface finish and extended tool life by orienting the tool to maintain optimum tool-to-part contact at all times.
  • Improved access to undercuts and deep pockets - through tilting the tool or component - allows shorter series tooling to be employed, further improving surface finish and eliminating the need for secondary setups.
  • The ability to machine from solid complex parts that would previously have needed to be cast. This capability is particularly beneficial for prototypes and small volume runs and is widely applicable to the latest Mill/Turn machines.


Using Edgecam, machines with twin turrets are easily programmed and synchronised for maximum efficiency. Balanced and mirror cutting cycles exploit the metal removal capabilities of multi-turret machines. Individual turret control and turret synchronisation ensure maximum efficiency. Separate instruction lists for each turret allow easy editing of synchronisation points and machining instructions.

The Balanced Turn Cycle maintains chip flow by offering the user a “Lead” parameter within the command.

Edgecam Simulator provides full 4-axis representation of the upper and lower turret, providing sequence verification before the machining process commences.
